Kenya Expands Pre-Filled VAT Returns with Customs Data Integration from May 2026

Effective Date: May 2026

Type: Legislation

Starting in May 2026, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will add import and export data from its Customs Management System (iCMS) to pre-filled VAT returns. Validated export values will automatically appear in VAT returns once the relevant customs export documents have been issued. KRA also launched pre-filled VAT returns for November 2024 transactions using draft data from the TIMS e-invoicing platform, with taxpayers required to review and confirm returns by 20 December 2024. Input VAT claims will only be deductible if validated through TIMS/eTIMS or supported by existing customs import declarations. These changes reflect the broader global move toward automated, transaction-based tax reporting, with Angola being one of the few other African countries offering pre-filled VAT returns.
