Fiji increased its standard VAT rate from 9% to 15% effective August 1, 2023, as part of a broader fiscal reform package aimed at strengthening public finances. The rise applies to most goods and services, with the exception of zero-rated and VAT-exempt items such as basic food, education, and healthcare. Businesses must update their invoicing systems, pricing, and VAT accounting processes to reflect the new rate. VAT returns in Fiji are typically filed monthly or quarterly based on turnover thresholds, with strict requirements on record-keeping and compliance. Failure to properly implement the updated rate may result in financial penalties or audit scrutiny.
