Germany Enables Multilingual E-Invoicing in 2025–28 Rollout

Effective date: January 1st, 2028

Type: Legislation

Germany will mandate electronic B2B invoicing between 2025 and 2028, requiring structured formats compliant with EN 16931.

A new BMF circular allows e-invoices to be issued in any of the EU’s 24 official languages, easing cross-border trade and reducing translation costs. Businesses must still include all VAT-required fields and be ready to provide a German translation on request during tax audits. The multilingual policy supports seamless intra-EU transactions and aligns with EU efforts to harmonize e-invoicing and VAT reporting.

Companies should update IT systems, train staff, and adopt standardized EU terminology to ensure compliance and smooth audits.
