Sweden Shifts to Digital VAT Returns

Type: Legislation

The Swedish tax agency has announced that starting May this year, taxpayers will no longer automatically receive paper VAT returns. This change is aimed at reducing waste and promoting electronic filing, given that 96% of companies already submit their returns digitally. Last year, only a small fraction of submitted returns were on paper, totaling 2.3 million declarations but with just 250,000 being utilized.

Under the new policy, companies must proactively request a paper return from the tax agency if needed, irrespective of their filing frequency. To assist taxpayers who relied on paper returns as a filing reminder, the agency is developing a new reminder tool. This shift underscores Sweden’s commitment to enhancing efficiency in tax administration and encouraging digital tax compliance among businesses.
